but in time we all forgot and we all grew

Oh hey look, more talking about The Office??? Specifically Ryan Howard and his deleted scenes?? SHUT UP YOU DON'T KNOW MY LIFE.
There were two deleted scenes from the past two episodes that filled me with unspeakable glee.
"When do you ever take responsibility for your actions?"
"Get off my ass, you hag."
I know I know, Ryan's a douche for calling her a hag. I can't help it, it kills me. Especially with Michael's "hey hey, something about that seems inappropriate," and Pam's look at the camera. RYAN AND PAM BICKERING = NEW FAVORITE.
UM HI I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN EVEN TALK ABOUT THIS!!!!!!! THAT IS HOW MUCH I LOVE IT.
Ryan, with layers! And self-loathing! And having an epic meltdown! EVERYTHING HE TOUCHES IS A FAILURE. HE ACTUALLY BELIEVED IN THE MICHAEL SCOTT PAPER COMPANY. I feel like this scene adds so much to his character and explains so much. Like, is this why he decided to become a douchebag slacker? Because he fails at everything so he decided to stop trying altogether?
I also love how he says he's "taking responsibility" for flipping out, because it's totally a response to Pam telling him he never takes responsibility. And the CHEESE PUFF TOSSING to Michael! And at the very end, "...Where'd Pam go?" Oh my god, that cracks me up so hard.
I figured out that in the timeline this must have come just before the commiseration/Thailand reveal scene, which means Pam couldn't have been completely freaked out (or she kinda got over it). I wonder what she thinks of Ryan after all this. I wonder if she, Michael, and Ryan are going to maintain any sort of "bond" for having gone through that experience together.
Probably that is too much to hope for. STILL, I DARE TO DREAM.
And, uh, I may have started writing a Pam and Ryan fic? Not Pam/Ryan, necessarily, and who knows if I'll finish it because I am crazy busy lately and haven't even written any fic at all in forever.
Oh, have I mentioned how much I'm looking forward to that new FOX show, Glee? The promos with the a capella Journey song give me chills. It's ridiculous.

3. Why is it that they only show hints of Ryan's humanity/awesome-ness in the deleted scenes?! It's pissed me off since season 3, when Ryan was dating Kelly and they had this whole thing with taking a present back and Ryan wound up climbing into the dumpster with her and it all played out in the deleted scenes. BJ Novak is great and he's good for more than just a withering stare or some sarcasm.

3. Yeah, that bums me out. I remember those dumpster scenes! I'm hoping that they're going to do more with him on the aired episodes and not have all of his development take place offscreen. Hopefully it was cut for lack of time and not because they don't want to go in that direction with the character.

3. I don't know what they want to do with Ryan. I hope that now that he's back at DM, they'll explore his character a little more. I feel like there's still something lacking with their presentation of him. I do wonder if he might be flirtier with Pam now, b/c of the loathing of Jim and b/c they just went through the MSPaperCo thing together.

Date: 2009-04-29 02:42 am (UTC)It's weird, because I have always liked Ryan as a character, but everything that's happened since he became a New York financial "prodigy" cokehead (which, let's face it, resonates because it's what happened to most of my friends from college) has just been building to this place where I just love him so much. I want to see Ryan Howard grow and learn and call Pam a hag some more along the way!
And I am so psyched for Glee; Lea Michele impressed the fuck out of me when I saw Spring Awakening, and anything involving Journey and musical numbers and high school awkwardness has to be made of win.

Date: 2009-04-29 10:55 pm (UTC)EXACTLY! I kind of liked Ryan in season two, but he wasn't my favorite. I liked him more in season three, but it wasn't really until toward the end of season four that I began to loooooooove him.

Date: 2009-04-30 01:09 am (UTC)Most of the folks who've seen it have been raving about it like it changed their life. I just didn't have as strong as a reaction. It's probably a good thing you haven't heard anything outside of the promos. You can watch with a fresh mind.

Date: 2009-04-29 03:24 am (UTC)"Betrayal ain't just a river in Egypt", probably because I've only *ever* seen or heard the denial/Nile joke in fandom, never outside of it until now.

And yeah, the cut scenes were hilarious. But last week's episode was pretty packed, so they must've had to trim for time.
